Task 4


Origins of contemporary artwork. Cultural / historical analysis
Analysis of the broad histories present in a specific artwork. Digital presentation

Select an ‘artwork’ produced from the postmodern period c1975 - present.

This artwork can come from any field of visual arts practice e.g. contemporary art, illustration, craft, etc. The artwork should be a work that interests and engages you and hopefully is connected to your own arts practice.

Trace the cultural and historical origins and influences on this specific artwork. Research and explore the broad cultural histories surrounding of the artwork and its precursors going back as far as you can into human history by making reasonable connections.

Get as much information as possible from a variety of sources (eg, internet, journals, books, etc) to inform your presentation.

Construct linking passages of text using your own words and quotes to explain the relevance of your cultural and historical inclusions.

Use appropriate links, videos, etc to form a clear, sequenced and logical presentation.

Consider the artworks cultural and historical links via:

Content
Symbolism, imagery, narrative, connotations
Design
Line, shape, form, tone, colour, texture, composition
Context
Location, proximity, presentation, cost, function
Media
Materials, technique, manufacturing, size, format.
Genre
Type, kind, cultural expectations, preconceptions
Audience
Present reception, historical reception, popularity, sub-cultures, niche appeal
Artist
Nationality, culture, biography, personality

Begin your research in the post-modern present and work your way back into human history.
Attempt to find precursors and historic and cultural connections across the following periods:

Post-Modernism c1975 - present
Modernism c 1875- 1975
Modern era c1500 - onwards
Mediaeval history c500 -1500
Ancient history c 3350BCE - 500
Prehistory

Attempt to consider cultural histories that may be ‘other’ to you. Perhaps Indian, Chinese, Mayan, African, etc

Present you images, research and links on a blog or digital equivalent.
Presentations to a small group in class.
